Portable Learning Environment

Imagine a situation where a learner using a mobile device can activate their own personal learning environment that boots up the minute they enter their memory card on the mobile device. This concept is now possible through the creative work of a Tasmanian company GlobalNet ICT, its product which will be in a beta release very soon provides users with a simple and customisable interface that boots automatically from a memory card, this then presents the learner with all the activities and resources they require for a predetermined period of time, week, month, etc.

The concept is based on the notion that e-learning does not have to take place while always being connected, the learner can carry around what they need to undertake the learning no matter where they might be located, any assessment or tasks that they undertake can then also be saved automatically back to the card. Once the activities have been completed the student can then exchange the memory card with the assessor / trainer for another updated card containing an additional period of learning. The concept provides huge possibilities for those in remote locations where connection to the web is poor or not available, and it allows for greater flexibility than that of a standard CD and desktop delivery.

Examples could include training on board vessels at sea, aquaculture, rural, etc. The idea of being able to whip out your learning at a moments notice anywhere and whenever there is a convenient moment is envisaged to be very appealing by learners and employers alike.

The simplicity of the whole concept means that this process could be easily customisable with only some base level ICT skills required by staff using the system. GlobalNet ICT are also considering professional development programs for staff interested in developing their own products and resources.

Practical database application

About Data, a very clever Western Australian software solutions developer has created a very promising mobile (PocketPC) desktop application for Environmental Health Audits, which is proving very popular for Local Government Environmental Health Officers. The program has a simple to use interface that allows officers to undertake audits with minimal fuss and without the mountains of hardcopy paperwork, it incorporates a signature block for on screen signing and best of all the documents can be synced to a desktop database or management system.
The product is currently in use with councils in Western Australia with plans for other localities certainly proving that the Pocket PC has true practical industry application. We are only just a step away from similar applications in the learning sector.
